Not made your New Year’s Resolutions yet? Good!

Happy New Year to you! I hope you had a good time with your nearest and dearest over the festive season!

And did you make your New Year’s Resolutions on 1st January, like you’re traditionally supposed to?

Well, it may not be the best thing to do! And I’ll tell you why!

Yes, we all need firm, measurable and stretching goals – and I’m a firm advocate of goal-setting.

But there are some strong reasons why you should NOT rush into setting your goals for the coming year on New Years’ Day and then find yourself disillusioned when you break your resolutions or miss your targets a few weeks – or even days – later!

A couple of years ago, a contrarian theory was published about New Year’s resolutions by a particular psychiatrist. His point was that New Year’s Day is the worst – yes, the WORST – day of the year to make resolutions!

Why? Because we’re over-spent, over-eaten, under-slept and generally stressed out!

And we’re definitely not in the mood to lose weight, stop smoking, or do good deeds for others.

Hardly the best time to focus on measurable, achievable goals, heh?

But there’s another reason why….

As Denis Watley noted: “The reason most people never reach their goals is that they don’t define them, or ever seriously consider them as believable or achievable. Winners can tell you where they are going, what they plan to do along the way, and who will be sharing the adventure with them.”

I’m sure that you, like me, find that rings true with your own approach to setting – and achieving goals!

But more on that in the next few days!

For now, please think about what you want to achieve in 2008! Don’t rush it – you need to be fully committed to achieving your goals – and they need to be measurable, so you can plan your way to achieving them.

Will you Retire This Year?

How do you set goals for yourself? When do you do this? What do you think about?

Please let me know by leaving a comment below – I’m offering a ‘surprise prize’ for the best contribution on how you set goals for yourself!

See you tomorrow!

  1. Philip Allen Says:

Most people’s New Year’s Resolutions are harmful and designed to fail because they are too vague and negatively worded like “to loose weight”.
Visit www.PhilipAllenReviews.info to find out why moving around a room can enhance the likelyhood of achieving SMART goals.
A SMART & positive New Year Resolution would be: to regain your ideal body weight (-50lb) by exercising 5min extra a day so you could get into your swim suit for your vacation in June because it is Specific, Meaningful to you, Action orientated, Realistic to achieve a steady weight loss of 2lb a week that stays off as it is caused by a life style change of eating smaller portions or cutting out one burger meal a week instead of the unhealthy diet/binge eating cycle and is Timed.
